Twenty-nine

Sofia

I’m lying on a hospital bed in my private room waiting to be prepped for my surgery when Jack walks in. I stare at him. It is a strange thing to see him in his scrubs. I never thought it possible, but he looks even more handsome than he normally does. Butterflies flutter about in my stomach.

“Are you nervous?” I ask him.

He grins confidently. “No. Are you?”

“No. I trust you implicitly.”

“Good. Can I have a taste?”

My eyes widen. “What?”

“One last taste before they wheel you in.”

I shake my head at his brazenness. “That’s not very professional, is it?”

“Nope. And that’s the way it’ll be forever between us.”

He locks the door and walks over to me, mischief in his eyes. He lifts the white gown. “Go on. Be a dirty girl, for me.”

I hesitate only for a second. What the hell. I want it as much as he does. I spread my legs and he swipes his tongue along my seam. Then he eats my pussy, the way only Jack Irish knows how until all the stars collide and I shatter on his tongue.

“I’ve left a wet spot on the bed now. The nurses will see it,” I say.

“Don’t worry about it, Princess. They’re used to all kinds of bodily fluids on the bed.”

I chew my lip. Something’s been worrying me. Maybe I won’t wake up from the anesthetic. Maybe this will be my last time with him. I catch his hand. I want to tell him I love him. He should know. He looks at me expectantly, but the words that come out of my mouth are totally different. “Do you think you’ll get bored of eating me one day?”

“I don’t bore easily. I’ve been drinking milk since I was a baby and I still love it,” he says with a wink.

I smile nervously. I really want to tell him I love him. Just in case I don’t wake up, but before I can pick up the courage, there is a knock on the door.

Jack opens the door and a nurse bustles in.

“Oh, doctor,” she says in a flustered voice.

He smiles cheekily at her. “Good morning, Nurse.”

He kisses me on the head. “I’ll be back to see you before they take you down to the anesthetist.”

While the nurse is taking my blood pressure, Lena comes in. I smile broadly at her. She has never been the same since the afternoon I showed her my back. She howled when she saw it, and the pitiful sound reminded me of our mother. The way she wailed when she lost her baby. That is the only time she wept like that, but it’s never left my mind. She never even cried like that when my father broke her limbs, or that time he plunged her hand in boiling water.

I held Lena, but I couldn’t stop her from crying. I learned that day that no matter how strong she seems we are both irreparably damaged, and all it requires is a trigger to expose that incurable wound.
